David Morton (Larbert) Ltd successfully delivered the full demolition and site clearance of the redundant grain store facility located in Loanhead, Midlothian. The project was completed within the 16-week programme and in full compliance with all statutory and client requirements.
Key Project Components:
Asbestos Removal: All asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were removed in accordance with CAR 2012 regulations. This included both licensed and non-licensed materials, with strict adherence to HSE guidelines and environmental controls.
Demolition Works: The project involved the dismantling and demolition of all above-ground structures, including grain silos and associated buildings, followed by the removal of all below-ground foundations and floor slabs.
Environmental Controls: Dust, noise, and vibration were continuously monitored and controlled using best practicable means. All works were carried out with minimal disruption to neighbouring industrial and residential areas.
Waste Management: Over 95% of demolition arisings were recycled or repurposed, in line with Zero Waste Scotland and SEPA guidelines.
Health & Safety: The project was completed with zero reportable incidents, supported by robust site inductions, exclusion zones, and daily safety briefings.
Site Restoration: Upon completion, the site was backfilled, graded, and left in a clean, level, and hazard-free condition, ready for future development.
Challenges Overcome:
The presence of live services and adjacent operational infrastructure required careful planning and coordination.
The removal of asbestos cement roofing from high-level structures was managed using a combination of MEWPs and controlled “wet and drop” techniques to minimise fibre release.
The project team maintained flexibility to accommodate unforeseen findings, including additional ACMs and structural complexities.
